I have no experience with Roon, JRiver, our any other music library software so I am unable to comment on whether the issues I mention above exist on those. I know that Audirvana offers a trial but I don't know what others might offer free trials. Try the trial options of programs you might be interested in and see how they work for you. It is something that you will want to consider before making a decision though. Some of this might be a big deal to you or maybe it isn't. Again, these things were more or less ignored by Plex and if they aren't, it was usually a 1 or 2 click process to solve it. The songs were correct but the tagging was jacked. This wasn't like an 80's music compilation, it was single album from a single artist. I don't recall what album it was that I downloaded from the Quboz store but the metadata, in addition to showing the same song title 6 or 7 times, also showed songs from a couple of different random unrelated artists. I finally just went back through quite a bit of music as I noticed it and used MP3 Tag to get these problems straightened out. The sound was worth it when I changed to Audirvana but I never realized how many metadata errors were in some of my music files. We won't even discuss the fact that most of the covers won't match. If you have a compilation (random example: Eric Clapton's Greatest) and it comes with some songs that were from a double CD set and multiple different albums (which is guaranteed), it is going to make your library feel and look messy if some songs are tagged as disc 1 or disc 2, since these will show up underneath the songs that aren't tagged this way and foul up the original order of the songs. Try listening to Pink Floyd's Dark side of the Moon on random and you will understand what I am trying to relay to you. There is almost nothing as annoying as having songs 2, 5, and 13 showing on a different album once you've grown accustomed to a particular order. If some song titles show as a "deluxe version" in the meta tags while others don't, it will likely give you an additional album with those songs that are tagged this way. The option to find the correct version of your recording with the proper order of songs? Once again. You know the poster option to fix an album cover problem for Plex? It doesn't exist. While things showed up as expected in Plex, many didn't in Audirvana. You would be amazed at how unbelievably sloppy some of the tagging is on some CDs or purchased music files. What I will tell you is that while Audirvana sounds superior to Plex (to my ears with my gear), it is not going to be kind to, or nearly as easy to deal with when it comes to metadata errors. Would I have noticed the difference if I weren't using a good DAC? I would say it's highly likely although I can't say for sure because I didn't try. I am not going to attempt to describe the differences since we all hear things different and you can try it and hear for yourself but I did notice a difference without critical listening. I have no idea what Plex was doing to the sound but it didn't take me long to realize that I didn't like it. I noticed an immediate difference to the sound I was hearing. I was having a problem with the Plex server software on my NAS and decided to go straight to the music files until the server issue was straightened out. ![]() The reason I tried this was because my entire music library is on a NAS. Audirvana brought life to the music, IMO, that I didn't realize was missing with Plex until comparing the 2. I was using Plex and then I downloaded a trial of Audirvana to compare. ![]() Plex, while being very easy to use and a fairly trouble free option, is not helping your music sound its best. I have been where you are and this is what I personally have found. ![]() The first bit of advice I will offer is to go directly to your music files without Plex and listen to see if you notice a difference. Although I am apprehensive to directly answer your question since there are subjective variables at play, I will at least respond to it.
